Look back at any of my strobed shoots and you'd see me using Photoflex light modifiers to shape and mold my light. I bought my very first softbox back in 1987, a Photoflex LiteDome (although battle-worn, I still use that same box today), and their products have served me well ever since. They've almost always been attached to a Speedotron Black Line system (big, heavy powerpack with individual heads), but since my 20 year old strobes have lately been dying a slow and ofttimes painful death, Photoflex's announcement of a new line of mono-light strobes was a welcome opportunity to try something new. Strobes are a first for the company, and there are 3 in this new lineup: the 300, the 650, and the 1000, named for their respective power watt/seconds. I received the biggest and most powerful one in the lot a couple months back- the Starflash 1000- and was finally able to run it through my paces. The first thing I noticed picking up the strobe is the rugged, tank-like construction. The impressive main body is built of extruded aluminum with a rubberized coating and weighs in at a solid 8 pounds. Each model has a different color coating; red for 300, blue for 650, and black for 1000. At first glance this seems purely cosmetic, but according to the designers its purpose is to help differentiate fill, background, and mainlights on your set. Not a bad idea.
